Tainted Friday!

Here is an 80's classic that is prettty much the pinnacle of 80's music. I think everyone alive has heard this song, and I think that everyone likes it. It's been covered by a lot of different people (note: I know that this is a cover of the original by Gloria Jones, but this is the best and the most famous version), and song were good and others no one cared. It was recently ruine.., I mean sampled by that fugbeast Rihanna in her attempt to ruin another great song with her shitty voice.(note #2: Look for a post about Rihanna and her sucktitude and general grossness on Monday on our other site, Shitty Music Monday) Until then, enjoy Soft Cell's "Tainted Love"!

Friday Underground

I heard this song on the way into work today. It's a song that came from the soundtrack of a really bad movie and turned out to be the best part of the film. So I present to you Digital Underground's Same Song

a 1/2 hit wonder

I call this song a 1/2 hit wonder because it disappeared as quickly as it came. It was cool song with a great beat. It's what I call a "skating rink" song because it takes me back to when I was 13 hanging out at Galaxy skating rink and these were the types of songs that were played. The video sucks but look for a few cameos towards the end it. If I make it a game, maybe you'll forget how bad the video is.

P.M. Dawn

It's friday! It's been a busy week so I will post a 3fer. This week I am posting the 3 biggest hits from PM Dawn. I had actually forgotten about these guys for a while now, and just got reminded of them today.

First we have "Set adrift on memory bliss." I always liked this song. It's got a cool beat and it sample's "True" by Spandau Ballet. Not that I know that song. That's a total chick song!



Next is "Looking through patient eyes." Which is like another version of "Set adrift," but still cool. I wasn't able to find the actual video, so you'll just have to enjoy the song by itself.




Finally, probably their biggest hit. Played across the nation at every school dance in 1992. I wonder how many millions of kids were swaying back and forth akwardly while slow dancing to this song under the watchful eye of Ms.(insert name here) the bitchy math teacher that nobody liked. Ahhh, the good ole days.

I don't know what happened...

Jazz and hip-hop. The two of them seemed destined to mix. It was even tested and proven by these two groups and there hit songs. People seemed to really like these songs. The first, is Digable Planets' "Rebirth of Slick." (I know we had this on the original site, but it needs to be done right.)

Next we have a song from US3 called "Cantaloop." This song seemed a bit more poppy then the other, but still has a cool jazz vibe to it.

2 of the best singers to come out of the 90's. And surprisingly enough, are both still alive. Good for them!

Flava In Ya Ear

Ok so this is me, switching it up from West Coast to the East. Now even though I'm from the West Coast there were a few artists that I really liked. This guy was one of them as shown by the video below. This was his first release under "Bad Boy".



THEN IT HAPPENED as it usually did. (See vid below) Puff Daddy/Diddy/WTF ever, got ahold of this kid and then fucked the whole program up. With Puff's shitty dancing and cornball moves, it's just made for bad video and hip-hop. This is when it all went downhill and it was over for our boy Craig Mack. This is probably why he left Bad Boy right after this album.

"See P. Diddy, you couldn't just leave it alone huh. You had to make him look like a smaller, younger B.I.G. Anything for the money right!"

And then there was another that he couldn't just stay out of. This was typical for anything that Puffy had his hands into. Randomly dancing and saying stupid shit in the songs/vids. WTF!

Tres Delinquentes!!

Does anyone else remember this song. It blew up in south Florida when it came out, but I'm not sure about everywhere else. I had never seen the video before. The best part? A midget on a skateboard... in a bar... for no apparent reason!!! I challenge you to find something better than that.

The award goes to...

The most unintentionally funny video of all time award goes to Journey for Seperate Ways. This video just oozes 80's cheese. Just look at the woman in the video. I don't think there was more of an 80's specimen than her. From the awesome hair and make-up, to the all leather skirt and jacket (collar up, of course) and white pumps. Hotness!!! I will now go through and point out the bits of the video that stand out as pure awesomeness!

(Author note: I only know Steve Perry's name. The rest of the band shall be reffered as the instruments that they play. Except for Chester, the bass player. More on that later.)

The video opens with them standing around as Keyboard plays an air keyboard, and Drummer keeps time on his air drums. Then BAM! The instruments appear. Amazing!

:20- Chick walks by and the entire band walks up to the camera as if they were in a high school musical. Then Drummer strikes a tough guy pose.
:29- Check out the dramatic camera cuts while Steve sings his heart out
:36- Now the rest of the band gets their air instruments and continue to rock out
:55- Keyboard is either playing his air keyboard, or seducing us with his tiger claws. Rawr!
1:15- Now we are in the band cluster. If you watch on the right, Drummer will bust out a little air drums for you. Then just to mess with you, he switches to air guitar. Tricky bastard.
1:27- Why would you play a keyboard up on the wall?
1:31- Does Drummer's shirt say "FOOSBALL?"
1:54- Steve is so upset, he slams his fist into the wall. It looks like it kind of hurts
2:07- Is he being dramatic, or is he seizing?
2:18- Here we are being treated to an awesome shot of Steve's mouth. Then we are treated to an awesome chase cam, where Steve is backing his way through a maze of trash as if he is being chased by a monster. But a really slow and lazy monster.
2:30- Holy shit! It does say "FOOSBALL" I can't tell if that is lame, or the coolest thing anyone has worn in a video ever.
2:33- Our first good shot of Chester's bitchin' moustache
2:38- Steve jumps into the shot like Richard Simmons and proceeds to walk away the pounds for us
3:04- This next bit confuses me. Why the hell is Drummer playing a bunch of oil drums? Yet the rest of the band gets to use their real instruments. Let me add that I love Chester's square 80's bass with the hidden tuning pegs. And his serious "rock" face. Everyone else just rocks for the camera.
4:20- The rest of the video is more of the same. Awesome 80's chick walking inexplicabilly around some warehouses. Steve Perry being awesome and dramatic at every possible chance. The rest of the band pretending that this is a great idea. Finally we cut to a shot with a chick in bed with headphones on. Was this all a bad dream? God, I hope so.

There is so much awesomness in this video, I'm sure I missed something. So let me know if you guys find anything else awesome.

What ever happened to these guys??

I remember that I really liked this song and a few others by K7. But as quickly as they showed up, they vanished. Does anyone out there in the interweb know what happened?

Bone Thugs Friday

Since today is Bone Thugs n Harmony Friday I am blessing you with one of their best songs. I don't know if you guys remember this or not but Bone's music talked about of course smoking weed and also some paranormal shit. Example, they had a song called Mr. Ouija. I had a friend who told me he had a friend who played their CD on a continous loop while he slept and when he woke up, he had scratches all over his face. I remember being like oh shit I better not play this shit. In retrospect I had some pretty stupid friends.

Summer of '96

It was the summer of ’96, and I had received a call from my favorite cousin Becky. She had mentioned that it would be cool if I could come out and visit them for a couple of weeks. I totally agreed! So with my next McCheck, (I used to work at McD’s) I bought me a plane ticket and was off to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. And yes, that is its real name. I ended up getting stuck in the Charlotte airport for an extra 3 hours. They actually have a Cheers bar in there. It didn’t look anything like the show, but I bought a pack of playing cards and played more solitaire in those few hours then I ever had. The only comfort I had at the time was my cd player and a couple of cds. By far the most listened to for me was Bone Thugs –N-Harmony’s E 1999 Eternal.


Why the hell is his head on fire?

Becky’s husband Gene was there to pick me up when I finally arrived. On the way to their house, we got a chance to catch up. He was also telling me about the Air Force and the base. I was so amazed to think that the base had a movie theater, a bowling alley, and like its own wal-mart type store. I couldn’t wait to check all this stuff out. We got to their house, and Becky was waiting for us. It was really cool to see her again. She actually lived with me for a while growing up, and was the closest thing to a sibling that I ever had. We always had a blast. That night we started a new tradition while eating dinner there. Gene would put on the new La Bouche cd and all through the meal he and I would bob our heads, like Steve and Doug Butabi (Night at the Roxbury).



The next two weeks were spent visiting all the places on base that I could go to. Not only was I amazed at all the different things there was to do on the base, but how cheap things were. Like bowling only cost us like $2 a game, plus there was no tax. Madness! Gene also started teaching me about golf. As much as I would’ve liked to be good, I wasn’t. So I rescinded myself to be his caddy. Which was awesome because I got to drive the golf cart! Our other past time was playing video games. When I first met Gene in 1990, we spent several days playing the original Metal Gear on the NES. Now was no different. He had a new Playstation and a Super Nintendo. Most of the time we would play one game in particular. Although I never beat him, it was still awesome. Boomshakalaka!



We also watched several great movies! Mostly Eddie Murphy movies. The Golden Child, Vampire in Brooklyn, and of course Coming to America. I could almost recite the entire movie after these two weeks. Another movie that stuck in my mind was CB4. It was so stupid it was funny. Plus with songs like “Straight outta Locash” you can’t go wrong. (NSFW language)



One of the days, we went to the mall. On the way there, I saw that I was running for state senate. Well, not me, but the sign said BRANNAN for State Senate. I thought that I had to have one of those. So Gene and I had planned to go out the next morning to the outskirts of town and find one out there and grab it and go. Conveniently for us there were two of them stapled to a board on a farm road just a few miles out of town. So we hop out and start pulling them off. As soon as we get started, Farmer Joe comes flying out of pick-up and asks what the hell are we doing? My first thoughts are “Oh shit! We are about to get shot and nobody will ever know!” And in the most impressive bit of high pressure improv I have ever seen, Gene starts off with this great story about how my name is Brannan and I’m from out of town and wanted one of the signs and we called the campaign office and asked to get one but they said that they were all out and that it would be ok if we came out there and grabbed one. He came up with all that without even missing a beat. I even believed it! Farmer Joe bought it and wished me a safe trip back to Florida. Back in the car, and after a great laugh. This song came on the radio and I will never forget it.



Another important visit we made, was to the flight line where Gene worked. I met a bunch of the guys he worked with and they were a trip. But it’s because of them I decided to join the Air Force. Back then I had wanted to be in the Army. I was so gung-ho. I wanted to be an Airborne Ranger. So these guys had to give me a hard time about it. Then one guy asked me why the Army and not the Air Force. I had no answer. Then asked me if I gave 100% in everything I do. I said that I did. Then he broke it down, and changed my view forever. He said “In the Army, it is expected that you give 100% all the time. And that’s just enough to get by. In the Air Force, if you give 100% you’ll be a fucking superstar!” I kind of just laughed it off at first, but the seed had been planted.

Unfortunately, my two weeks were up and it was time to go back home. It was the summer before my senior year, and I still had no idea what I was going to be when I grew up. It didn’t matter, I had an entire year to think about it. I had just had an awesome time and a summer I will never forget!
I’ll leave with probably my favorite song then. It was Green Day’s 2000 Light years away. It was off their album Kerplunk, and quite fitting for the end of my story.
